What is Ao Po'i?
•Posted on April 04 2024
Technically, ao poi is a fabric made of fine thread, with simple weaves and not very dense. Made with cotton fibers, their threads can be spun by hand or industrially. This fabric is ornamented with delicate hand-made embroidery, in which aspects of the local fauna and flora are figuratively represented.
Nowadays, embroidery is done with industrial cotton threads, in the same tone as the base fabric, or in tones of the creator's choice.
In the past, both weaving and embroidery were made solely by hand, with cotton grown in each artisan's home.
